Before you start
Before applying, settle the wedding date, confirm an officiant and choose an Ontario location. The licence must cover the planned ceremony within its 90-day validity. Use the ServiceOntario online application linked by Oakville, then await local staff review and appointment instructions.
Names must match on both identification pieces. To include a middle name on the licence, it must appear on both pieces. A non-English identification document needs the original plus a certified Canadian translation. Licence issue and the wedding ceremony are separate bookings.

Rules and exceptions
- Adults 18 or older apply under the ordinary rules. Applicants 16 or 17 need the prescribed parent/guardian consent form signed before a Commissioner of Oaths.
- If divorced in Canada, bring an original or court-certified Certificate of Divorce or Decree Absolute. A divorce judgment or order alone is not accepted.
- For an electronic Canadian divorce certificate, bring a printout and forward the issuing court’s email to publicinquiries-clerks@oakville.ca before the appointment. An attorney or third-party email is not enough.
- A divorce outside Canada needs Foreign Divorce Authorization from Ontario’s Registrar General before the town can issue a licence.
- Debit, Visa, Mastercard and American Express are accepted at the appointment. Cash is not.
- The town warns it cannot issue a licence after an earlier informal, symbolic or spiritual ceremony in the circumstances it describes. Contact the Clerk before applying if that may affect you; do not assume a later civil booking resolves it.
